Cocoon Diaries: Entry #11 – The Joy of Being Unavailable: Turning Off Notifications and Turning On Life

Being alive….

DND Is My Love Language
A ping, a buzz, a ding at every hour,
My phone, possessed, with FOMO's tragic scream.
Yet joy was lost beneath this flashing power,
No space remained to dream a quiet dream.

Then came one click — that sacred toggle switch,
Do Not Disturb — oh blissful, silent gold!
No “urgent?” calls, no midnight gossip glitch,
Just me, my chai, and stories yet untold.

I smiled. I breathed. I looked up from the screen.
Discovered birds, and clouds, and even thought!
The world survived without me — quite serene,
While I just lived, and notifications not.

So now I claim, with swagger and delight,
My phone is off. My soul? Hugely online.

Ding, Ping, Buzz — The Noisy Apocalypse

Remember when phones used to be… just phones?

Now mine sounds like it’s auditioning to be the background score for a Marvel movie.
One day it buzzed, and I literally said out loud, “WHAT NOW?” like a fed-up detective in a crime show.

WhatsApp groups, bank OTPs, low storage alerts, someone replying “👍” to a message I sent two days ago…
It’s like digital dandruff. Constant, annoying, and pointless.

The Decision: GOING OFFLINE ON PURPOSE (except for people who matter the most to me!)

It started with a brave moment of silence:
DND mode.
Then:
App mute.
Then:
Logged out. Deleted. Ghosted. Bliss.

Result?

  1. No one died.
  2. No one called the National Helpline to report my absence.
  3. In fact, no one noticed for 36 hours.
(Which was mildly insulting, but mostly empowering.)

What I Gained from Being Gloriously Unavailable

  • Uninterrupted tea
  • A full conversation with my dog where I didn’t once glance at a screen
  • The moonrise and sunrise – I studiously do not watch my screen except to monitor my life-lines: My pets!
  • The smell of my plants after watering them and the wonderous smell of washing the terracotta pails of water for my feathered friends.
  • Time to think before replying (and often realising the reply didn’t need to exist)

My Pets React to My Offline Era

🐶 Loki:
Now gets 100% of my attention.
Judges me mildly when I sneak one peek at the screen.
Has taken over the role of “Notification Supervisor.”

🐇 The Bunnies:
Not affected. They never subscribed to notifications anyway.
They’ve been on DND since birth.

🦃 The Turkeys:

Thank goodness she calls out and checks on us. Yes Woman, the quality of work at our end needs constant monitoring. Goblin pecks at the seeds and looks up as if to say: Hmm, this seems fine. Thanks for keeping a check!

I Muse as I pull up my feet after another hectic morning:

Being unavailable is the new luxury.

It’s not arrogance. It’s self-respect.
It’s not detachment. It’s deep connection — with the real, the present, and the peaceful.

So next time someone says, “Why didn’t you reply?”
Tell them you were attending a high-priority event: your own life.

What ever it may be in life, Its always about ‘FOCUS’ – and our understanding of that will make the difference between a life which yields something or is aimless……
The same angle..

…………….But notice how its just the ‘focus’ which matters – about what you want to keep in sharp closeness to yourself and when and why is your choice. Because after all happiness or the lack of it comes from circumstances and how we choose to look at them.

And its never about the ‘other’ person – who may be is responsible for contributing to circumstances for your unhappiness – but does not and cannot control how you choose to deal with what has been dished out to you. He too has played his part in the whole drama called life!
