Oh, The Country I Once Knew

This Republic day…..

Oh, the country I once called my own,
Where simplicity sat on a golden throne.
When words were treasures, honest and true,
And folks didn’t flaunt what their neighbors knew.

Back when “showing off” was a terrible shame,
And traditions weren't just a nostalgic name.
When values stood tall, like trees in a row,
And children were taught what they needed to know.

We'd gather to chatter, to laugh and to jest,
No selfies required to prove we were best!
Rivalries were clean, no punches below,
Just a handshake to settle the seeds we’d sow.

Opinions flew freely, like birds in the air,
No cancelling someone for a differing flair.
Debates were a sport, with respect as the rule,
Not a mud-slinging contest on Twitter’s cesspool.

But oh, how we’ve changed, some for the good,
Yet so much feels lost in the new neighbourhood.
Now hashtags define how one takes a stand,
And ‘likes’ outweigh a helping hand.

I miss when “cool” meant doing what’s right,
Not chasing followers deep into the night.
When upbringing mattered, and lessons were taught,
And “values” weren’t something that could be bought.

Still, I chuckle at how far we’ve gone astray,
Swapping depth for emojis in words we say.
I dream of my country, that simpler scene,
Where hearts were rich, though pockets lean.

So here’s to the past, where life had its grace,
And every wrinkle had its rightful place.
Though change isn’t evil, I still hold it dear—
That country of mine, so far, yet so near!
