The Art of Enjoying Simple Beauty!

A Celebration of Mundane Evenings….

Amid the chaos of our busy lives, there lies an understated beauty in the moments we often overlook. It’s not found in grand spectacles or extraordinary events but in the quiet, unassuming simplicity of a routine evening. It’s a beauty that whispers rather than shouts—a gentle reminder to pause and revel in the ordinary.

The simple joys of life come from a stillness of our own calm mind.
The cacophony of endless chaos and the desires of over-achieving often take away the essence of our life: peace.
Yet many of us want more whilst not realising that that greed for more (of anything) takes away almost everything of what we may already have.
So pause, evaluate and reset priorities.
To get quality into your life, you have to get it into focus.

Take, for instance, the arrival of my dear bulbul bird on the nearby curtain rod, chirping away asking for fruits at another unearthly hour. Its delicate landing, a symphony of feathers and grace, the cutest tilt of the head, and then calling out to another of its kind. It is a fleeting miracle that requires nothing but our attention to turn into a cherished memory. Or the moon, shyly peeking through the dusky sky, casting silvery light on a world preparing to sleep. It feels like an ancient secret shared only with those who bother to look up or maybe something described in some writings from some pages I had read years ago.

The ordinary makes me sigh in relief for it tells of a normalcy in my life which I have come to treasure so much.

Then there are the flowers—those white neon blossoms glowing against the backdrop of evening shadows is just there at my balcony’s height, as if nature itself decided to switch on its fairy lights. Suddenly the wind carries in the aroma of home-cooked meals, a blend of spices and warmth, connecting us to unseen neighbours. In the distance, a pet barks faintly, perhaps to remind us of life’s playful persistence. And maybe of being alive to everything around us?

I look for simple joys, routine moments – an ordinary person trying to make extraordinary strides.
Unfiltered, uncensored, uncluttered = real! (My neon flowers nee fairy lights!)

Closer home, the birds are busy crafting their nests for the night – a choreography of wings, chirping, rustling leaves, and a noisy conversation amongst themsleves. My own pet sniffs around endlessly, a tiny detective on a mission only he understands. It’s hard not to smile at his endless focus and enthusiasm. Needless to add we have caught a field rat and a handful of rats with our persistence.

Aha! there we go a-sniffing and walking in the shoes of his Police pet parent.
Beware, the rats and all creepy crawlies – Detective Beagle is on his beat!

The turkey shed’s fans whir steadily, a monotonous sound that paradoxically soothes. It’s the soundtrack of an evening where time feels suspended – a “nothingness” that is anything but empty. Even the swarm of mosquitoes, as irritating as their buzzing may be, serves as a reminder of the intricate web of life that surrounds us.

I do things which make me happy and uplift an ordinary day to another level.
I have realised that waiting for the perfect moment is the most over-rated concept we have made ourselves believe in.
Every moment is perfect if lived well and every move is well-timed when done with the heart!

Inside, the shuffle of feet signals the household settling down. These soft sounds – doors closing, chairs creaking, someone humming a tune – are the heartbeat of a home. They root us in the present, grounding us amidst the general calmness of a mundane evening.

This is the art of enjoying simple beauty: noticing, appreciating, and immersing ourselves in the tiny wonders of our everyday lives. It’s about finding joy not in what’s missing, but in what’s already here.

These blooms aren’t for any special day – I do this to my home and mood every second day; I do all that which makes me happy and more.
A settling of the cupboard, baking a cake (the recipe book is my Mom’s with the pages disintegrating but the recipes are the most amazing one can ever try), having a cup of tea, creating something from waste, redoing my decor – there’s never any system in my mundane madness – Just me and my happiness!

As we navigate the complexity of existence, let’s remember to pause and embrace these moments. For in the end, it’s the ordinary evenings like these that weave together the fabric of a life well-lived.

I have always loved the grand old trees like these and symbolically the grand old ideals, values and people like my maternal grandmother who helped us to keep our sanity for almost 9 decades and when we were at our lowest too, and those grand ideals which Mom espoused and my father whoa s parents instilled in case for fairness and value systems which have stood the test of times making me who I am today.

This awesomely grand tree from my son’s university down-under has always fascinated me for its massiveness and grandeur and the fact that it has been there for almost a century – deep roots, huge expanse, encouraging a dense under-growth – so much like what all our lives should eb for those around us.

Encouraging and allowing our kids and people around us to blossom and grow while being rooted in our own traditions, yet having the necessary exposure and vison for encouraging, absorbing and viewing the wide expanse of the world around us.

Thus, making it a better place.

So, I take a deep breath, reminiscence about another day converting into an evening and soon the night and allow the calmness to wash over me. Its an art, I feel, to allow yourself to be awed by the extraordinary beauty of your mundane evening and existence.

Because sometimes, “nothing” is everything.
